The seventh edition of the compilation series and DIY festival “The Music of the Secret Society that Owns Belgrade” organized by Inverted Spectrum Records will take place from May 27 to 31 across several venues in Belgrade, featuring local and international artists from the alternative, psychedelic, and avant-garde music scenes.
“The Music of the Secret Society that Owns Belgrade”, or simply “Društvo” (Society), is a series of compilations and DIY festivals organized by the record label Inverted Spectrum Records, with the aim of documenting, promoting, and celebrating the alternative, underground, and sub-underground music scene of Belgrade and its surroundings.
Launched in 2018, the project has over the years embraced a wide range of musical styles, focusing particularly on psychedelic and avant-garde variations of rock, pop, jazz, punk, electronic music, and traditional forms. The project especially highlights authentic examples of artistic expression that do not follow either mainstream or established subcultural conventions.
This year’s edition of the festival will take place at Sprat on May 28, Kontrapunkt on May 29, Kvaka on May 30, and Čilton on May 31. Artists performing at this edition include Damjan Brkić, Dunavski Buzukije, Fish in Oil Underground, Golubi i Bezumnye Kashevary, Ibar, Kabare Nebula, Lira Vega, Pinokio Petkom, The Durians, Turbo Trans Turisti, Aural Apothecary, The Cyclist Conspiracy DJ Set, and Una Miletić DJ Set.
Besides presenting some of the most exciting currents within the city’s music scene, the festival also serves as a gathering point for the alternative music community, where enthusiasts – whether musicians, audience members, or people involved in other roles within the scene – can connect, exchange ideas, and experience several celebratory days of music in a more intimate atmosphere than that offered by larger festival productions.
The festival will open on May 27 at Kontrapunkt with a psychedelic-oriental rock night featuring three “heavy” instrumental acts: Congulus from Istanbul, the Russian band Jesss from Belgrade, and an improvisational supergroup composed of prominent musicians from Belgrade’s psychedelic rock scene, whose lineup will be announced shortly before the event.
The seventh compilation will be released shortly before the festival exclusively on the Bandcamp page of Inverted Spectrum Records and will be available for free streaming and download.
