Jazziré festival is a rather small city cultural event, which has been recognized as “the one that always stays outside of the mainstream trends”. It is certainly a specific musical impulse of the city of Subotica and can be described as a permanent resistance against the conventional artistic expression.
Experimental, avant-garde and exploratory music in first instance, but also free-jazz, transitions and fusions towards other musical genres, often returns to the roots and ritual music, and perhaps most of all, its organic connection with the achievements of contemporary European improvisative music – all of these terms are usually associated with Jazziré.
Since its first edition in 2009, local artists have their permanent place in the program, some of them with already established careers: Szilárd Mezei with his various ensembles, Jasna Jovićević with many of her projects, Fish in Oil, Boris Kovač, Eyot, Tijana Stanković and others.
Among the worldwide headliners who have performed at the festival in recent years are Mats Gustafsson, Mary Halvorson, Akosh S, Grencsó collective, and in cooperation with the former Kanjža Jazz Festival also Peter Brötzmann, Franz Hautzinger and others. The artistic director of the festival is Dejan Vujinović.
