The studio album “Listaj goro” (“Leaf Out, Forest”) by the women’s vocal group “Ribaševke” is a valuable testimony to the living singing heritage of the Užice region in western Serbia. Founded in 1979 in the village of Ribaševina, the group has spent decades preserving the authentic two-part vocal tradition of western Serbia, having developed their singing skills from early childhood within a family and village context. As noted by ethnomusicologist Dr. Dimitrije O. Golemović, “Ribaševke” are “typical representatives of the local vocal tradition,” distinguished by exceptional musicality, strong memory, and a deep understanding of the terminology and social contexts in which these songs were once performed. Their repertoire encompasses both the older and newer layers of two-part singing – known locally as singing “na glas” and “na bas” – reflecting the characteristic bimodality of western Serbian vocal practice (D. O. Golemović). The album presents 25 songs, predominantly from the newer “na bas” tradition, alongside examples of the older style and a unique piece combining both vocal approaches. “Ribaševke”’s performance is marked by clear diction, perfectly blended voices, and refined dynamic control, elevating their singing beyond local boundaries and making it a model for younger generations. Their first recordings were released in 1986 (PGP RTB), and “Listaj goro,” recorded nearly three decades later, confirms the continuity and vitality of their vocal expression. Deeply rooted in tradition yet widely recognized as distinctly “theirs,” the songs of “Ribaševke” have become part of the repertoire of numerous vocal ensembles and cultural associations, securing their role as enduring guardians and teachers of Serbia’s musical heritage.
