The album “Vrata mora” (The Door of the Sea) by the Novi Sad ensemble Moraitika is a subtle yet striking debut release that opens a distinctive musical space inspired by maritime landscapes and the atmosphere of the Mediterranean. Built around the original compositions of pianist Nera Beljanski, the ensemble brings together a combination of young and experienced musicians who collectively shape a sound situated between ambient, pop, and world music aesthetics. The album’s musical expression is based on gentle, melismatic melodies and a calm, flowing dynamic. Piano, synthesizers, and bass guitar form the core of the sound, complemented by discreet appearances of instruments associated with traditional music, such as the frula flute, accordion, and darbuka. This blend creates a layered yet transparent sonic texture in which elements of contemporary pop arrangements, jazz nuances, and ethno sensibilities intertwine. An additional dimension is provided by the voice of Nera Beljanski, who sings in an imaginary language, freeing the voice from semantic meaning and focusing instead on pure melody and emotional expression. This approach, combined with simple arrangements and multi-tracking techniques in pieces such as “Mala luka Samedenija”, “Nokturno”, and “Grad pod morem”, creates a meditative, almost cinematic atmosphere. With “Vrata mora”, Moraitika opens an unusual musical path on the local scene, blending elements of pop, classical, and Balkan ethno music into a calm, ambient sound that invites attentive listening, contemplation, and relaxation.
