The studio album “Zidjma Ikore” by the Belgrade-based group “Institute”, founded in 1974, represents a continuation of decades-long sonic exploration led by multi-instrumentalist Veljko Nikolić – Papa Nik. Throughout its development, the ensemble also performed under the names “Gandharva”, “Bridge”, and “Visoka vegetacija”, shaping a distinctive musical language that can be described as alternative, experimental ethno-jazz. Over the course of its long history, “Institute” has passed through various creative phases, each carrying its own name; among them is “Acatula Band”, a designation added to the band’s name as part of one of its distinct artistic periods. Integral elements of Institut’s opus may be characterized as a fusion of jazz fusion and cool jazz, global ethno music with strong influences from African, Indian, and Balkan traditions, as well as music of a free-spirited and experimental nature. Their sound emerges through the use of new, modified, or unconventionally applied instruments, driven by a constant search for authentic expression. Compositions are primarily created live, evolving through a series of improvisations based on loosely agreed rhythmic, harmonic, and tonal structures, allowing for varying degrees of deviation. “Institute” has never been a conventional ethno group, but rather a kind of Fluxus formation, merging ancient sound sources with contemporary technological innovations and affirming the vitality of one of the most intriguing projects of the Belgrade alternative scene.
