This ten-CD box set is released as a limited edition presenting a representative selection from the opus of the cult Belgrade ensemble Institute, which for more than four decades has explored the boundaries between improvised music, imaginary folklore and experimental sound. The demanding realization of this project was led by Veljko Nikolić – Papa Nik, one of the founders and the key driving force behind the ensemble. The music of Institute can be described as alternative and experimental ethno-jazz, shaped by strong influences from African, Indian and Balkan musical traditions. Their artistic expression is based on improvisation, open forms and the exploration of new sonic possibilities, often through unusual instruments or unconventional uses of existing ones. Compositions most often emerge through collective performance, as a spontaneous sequence of improvisations within loosely defined rhythmic and harmonic frameworks. Since its founding in 1974, several hundred musicians have passed through the ensemble, further enriching its aesthetic diversity. According to co-founder Srđan Aleksić – Fraparega, Institute has never been a conventional ethno group, but rather a kind of Fluxus collective, which through irony, stage expression and an interdisciplinary approach brings together diverse musical traditions and contemporary technologies. The box set is accompanied by a 32-page booklet in English, featuring photographs and documentary material that illuminate the artistic evolution of this unique ensemble. The edition was produced in a small print run and is available exclusively directly from the publisher.
