The double album “Balkanski džez Lale Kovačeva” (Lala Kovačev’s Balkan Jazz) presents a selection of recordings from one of the most significant periods of his artistic career, dedicated to the meeting point of jazz and Balkan folk music. This release was originally conceived as a much larger publishing project that would encompass different phases of Kovačev’s work; however, this edition focuses on his creative output from the 1980s, when Kovačev, in collaboration with bassist Vojin Mališa Draškoci, developed the concept of Balkan jazz and the “organic” fusion of folklore with contemporary improvised music. As Vojislav Pantić notes, before Kovačev there were musicians interested in the intersection of jazz and Balkan folklore, but “no one before him succeeded in carrying out this operation so completely and with such a clear artistic stance,” since his jazz “did not interpret or misuse tradition, but remained inseparably connected to it.” The album features jazz arrangements of traditional melodies such as “Zajdi, zajdi” and “Ruse kose curo imaš”, in which folk motifs become the foundation for contemporary improvisation and orchestral development. In these compositions, as the booklet authors emphasize, the “highest level of interaction between cultural identities” was achieved, creating a new music that is no longer merely jazz with folkloric elements, but a distinctive expression rooted in Balkan tradition and the language of modern jazz. Reflecting on the significance of this body of work, Ivan Ivačković points out that Kovačev, “rushing ahead of his time, shaped a brilliant, at moments almost genius experiment” that continues to fascinate listeners with its emotional depth and masterful craftsmanship. This edition also includes rare recordings by various line-ups of the Balkan Impressions project, featuring both studio and live performances, preserving the energy of an artist who was among the first to recognize the immense creative potential of Balkan folklore and transform it into one of the key moments in the development of jazz and world music in Serbia.
