The 14th Gergina International Vlach Music Festival will be held in Negotin, in the “Stevan Mokranjac” Cultural Centre (Đorđe Stanojević Square 5), on April 17 and 18, 2023.
Traditionally, the “Gergina festival” is tied to the second and third day of Easter. This prestigious event dedicated to the musical and cultural heritage of the Vlachs was held for the first time in 2009. The organizer of the festival is the association of the same name, which has its own branched activities: festival, ethno group, label…
The festival is preceded by “Gergine Days”, which last from April 10 to 14, 2023. It is a kind of introductory manifestation, which offers a suitable program in the form of exhibitions and promotions of new Cd and book editions a week before the festival.
In addition to two music evenings (both starting at 7 p.m.), as the main events, the Gergina festival will also include the promotion of the “Đe duor” CD (Gergina Records) with traditional songs interpreted by Danijela Pražić. The promotion is scheduled for April 18, starting at 6 p.m.
The first evening is of a competitive nature and is aimed at young performers. Competitors compete for prestigious awards in the categories of “Best Vocal Soloist” and “Best Instrumentalist”, as well as the “Božidar Janucić Special Award”, and the “Festival’s Special Award”, which is given to a foreign performer for fostering Vlach music. This year, a total of 18 young performers will compete, accompanied by the Boban Pecić Orchestra. During the evening, Cultural and Artistic Society “Graničar” from Halovo will have a show as guests.
This year, the contestants will be evaluated by the following panel of judges: PhD Dimitrije Golemović (ethnomusicologist and composer), Marija Vitas (ethnomusicologist, editor of Etnoumlje magazine) and Maja Stojanović (professor at “Stevan Mokranjac” High School in Negotin).
The second festival evening is non-competitive and will gather a large number of prominent vocal and instrumental interpreters of Vlach music, who will perform accompanied by the Slobodan Pecić Orchestra, and the Cultural and Artistic Society “Štula” Voluj is also expected to perform.
The artistic director of the festival is Nenad Kamidžorac, while the director of this year’s Gergina festival edition is Dragiša Golubović.
